Dual Boot Linux and Windows on Separate Hard Drives

1) Disconnect and unplug the power to the
Windows hard drive.
2) Connect the Hard Drive (that will contain Linux)
as the Master.
3) Insert the Linux install disk, and install per
the Linux Distribution's instructions.
4) Boot into the Linux Distribution, and open a
Terminal window.
5) Type 'cd /boot/grub'
6) Type 'sudo cp menu.lst menu.lst_backup'
7) Depending on whether Gnome or KDE is installed,
and what editor you prefer, Type one of the following
to open menu.lst in an editor with administrator privileges:
KDE
'kdesu kate menu.lst'
'kdesu kwrite menu.lst'

GNOME
'gksudo gedit menu.lst'

8)
Find the line

hidden

and replace with

#hidden

9) To adjust the time grub is displayed at bootup,
change the following value of timeout (in seconds)...
I'd suggest 10 seconds(default is 3).:

timeout 10

10) Find the code that is similar to the following:
title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.17-10-generic
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/sda5 ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-10-generic
quiet
savedefault
boot

To have Windows be the first option in the operating system boot order,
and be the operating system that is loaded by default if the GRUB menu
selection times out without manually making a selection, then paste the
follwing code ABOVE the title line for the linux OS (the code you just
previously found)

title Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
makeactive
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
chainloader +1

To change the order of the operating systems, and have Linux Boot by default,
place the previous code AFTER the Linux OS code.

11) Save the file and quit, then shutdown.
12) Connect the Windows Hard drive as the slave drive
13) Power on the computer, and when the GRUB screen
appears, it will display the operating systems as
defined in the menu.lst file.
14) Pick the operating system you want to boot into,
and enjoy!

## default num
# Set the default entry to the entry number NUM. Numbering starts from
0, and
# the entry number 0 is the default if the command is not used.
#
# You can specify 'saved' instead of a number. In this case, the default
entry
# is the entry saved with the command 'savedefault'.
# WARNING: If you are using dmraid do not change this entry to 'saved'
or your
# array will desync and will not let you boot your system.
default saved

## timeout sec
# Set a timeout, in SEC seconds, before automatically booting the
default entry
# (normally the first entry defined).
timeout 10

## hiddenmenu
# Hides the menu by default (press ESC to see the menu)
#hiddenmenu

# Pretty colours
#color cyan/blue white/blue

## password ['--md5'] passwd
# If used in the first section of a menu file, disable all interactive
editing

# command 'lock'
